Infrared Heater Performance Tips

An infrared heater can help save you money on your monthly heating bills by limiting the time your home’s furnace needs to run. This helps to cut down on costs because these types of heaters require much less power than your furnace, and are very efficient in terms of heat distribution and maintainability. To read more about how infrared heat works, please visit this post.

If your main reason for buying an infrared heater was to help increase your home’s energy efficiency, while also cutting down on heating costs, then here are some great guidelines you can follow in order to get the most out of your new investment.

  • It is best to place your infrared heater in a space that does not receive much airflow. A low amount of airflow will allow the heater to exchange heat with the surrounding area more quickly.
  • If you have a room with both exterior walls and interior walls, you’ll want to point the infrared heater towards the cooler exterior wall. This is because the cooler wall will actually  draw in more of the heat, helping to efficiently spread the heat throughout the entire area.
  • An infrared heater will operate most efficiently when set in the 68-72 degree Fahrenheit range. The heat produced by infrared heaters is based on a concept known as “soft heat”. This means that because the heat they produce mixes with the humidity in the air, a temperature setting of 68, will provide heat that feels like 72 degrees.
  • If you are using an infrared heater to heat an isolated room, you will want to close any existing vents in the room, which will help keep the heat contained in the area.
  • It is always recommended that concrete floors be covered with carpet to provide some additional heat insulation. If an infrared heater is being used to heat a bare concrete floor though, it should be placed above the ground so the concrete does not “steal” the heat from the room.
  • One of the best features of an infrared heater is that it takes some of the load off of your central heating system. The best way to utilize an infrared heater is to set your furnace to a lower than normal temperature, like 68 degrees, and then place the heater  in the space where your family spends most of their time. This eliminates the need of running your furnace to heat rooms that are rarely used in your home.
  • Lastly, the best spot for an infrared heater that is being used to heat a large area is in a central location of the room. This is because the infrared heat waves emitted by the heater will travel out in all directions heating the objects in the room.
