Infrared Heater Information & FAQs

How does an Infrared Heater warm my house in comparison to a standard electric coil heater?

Infrared Heaters work by warming the entire surrounding area from floor to ceiling. Most standard units will only heat the area directly in front of them and allow most of their heat their heat to rise to the ceiling and be wasted. So in terms of heat distribution, Infrared Heaters are much more effective.

The video below shows the superiority of Infrared Heaters, and provides a great demonstration of their heating power.
Notice how none of the heat that the Infrared Heater produces is wasted. It is all efficiently used to warm the area.

How does an Infrared Heater work?

Infrared Heaters work by transferring their heat to the surrounding area via electromagnetic waves. Infrared Heaters emit thermal energy, which is what makes them so energy efficient. The energy that the heater emits is absorbed by the materials around it, which in turn begin to emit their own thermal energy. This is what gives Infrared Heaters the capability to heat the area of an entire room, and not just allow the heat it produces to move directly upwards.

Infrared Heaters commonly contain either a quartz heating element, or a ceramic heating element. These materials are used in Infrared Heaters because the wavelengths of thermal energy they emit are ideal for providing maximum heat absorption. The Infrared Heating unit will heat these elements until they reach the temperature necessary to pass on their heat via the Infrared Process.

Infrared Heaters also contain a DC Fan unit that helps to distribute the heat. The fans take in air, pass it over the heating elements and then re-distribute the heated air it into the room.

Are Infrared Heaters Energy Efficient?

Infrared Heaters are highly energy efficient. A large percentage of the heat they emit is naturally absorbed by the materials around it so little is wasted. The amount of heat they produce vs. the amount of energy they consume can result in lowered heating costs for your home.

Infrared Heaters are also designed to evenly distribute the heat they emit, and not just allow it to rise to the ceiling like most common electric heaters do.

Are Infrared Heaters Safe?

Infrared Heaters are a very safe heating option for your home. Infrared Heaters eliminate the threat of fires because the heating element will never reach the point of a combustible temperature.

Infrared Heaters are also safe to the touch, and will never burn any children or pets that accidentally touch the unit. Pets will actually be drawn to the heater because of the warm, cozy heat that it provides.

How fast will an Infrared Heater warm the surrounding area?

When placed in a large room, an Infrared Heater is capable of heating the entire area, wall to wall and floor to ceiling, in approximately 10-15 minutes.

The Infrared Heater begins to heat the room immediately, but the optimum level of ambient temperature is usually reached in this time span.

How Large of an area can an Infrared Heater effectively heat?

Most of the popular brands of Infrared Heaters, like Comfort Zone and EdenPure , are both rated to heat a 1000 sq foot area.

What kind of power source do Infrared Heaters use?

Infrared Heaters use electric power sources, and can be plugged directly into one of your home's standard wall outlets.

Infrared Heaters will use electricity more efficiently than standard units, and will also heat the area more effectively.

Where is best location for an Infrared Heater in a large room?

The great thing about Infrared Heaters is that they do not need to be put in the middle of the room in order to heat the entire area evenly.

Simply place the Infrared Heater in a corner of the room and face it towards the center for maximum heat exchange.

Is an Infrared Heater safe to place on my carpet, or hardwood floors?

Infrared Heaters can be placed anywhere in the home without the fear of fires, or flooring damage. Because the unit is always only warm to the touch on the outside, it will never ignite anything around it.

Is there any installation required for an Infrared Heater?

Infrared Heaters do not require any installation. The units are all basically “plug and heat” units. Most of the common brands sit on convenient coaster wheels so moving them from one room to another is a very simple process.

Will an Infrared Heater lower my heating bill?

An Infrared Heater will help to lower your heating bill if you are able to keep your home’s thermostat set to a lower level and allow the Infrared Heater to do the heating. Setting the thermostat just 3-5 degrees lower will most certainly pay off in the long run during the cold season.
